21 - Short acting Insulins

Explanation : This mnemonic helps in remembering the short acting insulins.

LISTED PROFESSIONAL = Lispro (subcutaneous short-acting insulin)

ASPIRING = Aspart (subcutaneous short-acting insulin)

GLUTEAL = Glulisine (subcutaneous short-acting insulin)

IN HOURLY = Inhaled regular insulin (inhalation short-acting insulin)

REGULAR = Regular insulin (subcutaneous short-acting insulin).(crystalline zinc insulin)

*Regular subcutaneous and inhalation insulins have an effective duration period of 4-6 hours, where as the rest of the short acting insulins have an effective duration period of 3-4 hours .

*Glargine is the longest acting insulin preparation with an effective period of activity of 24 hours.
